Earthquakd on the East Coast

Post by Pumpkin_Man » Wed Aug 24, 2011 9:13 am

Anyone here from Washington DC, Virginia or the east coast? I heard you had an earthquakd. There have been a few earthquakes in Illinois, but every time they happened, I was either asleep or they were too mild for me to even notice.

I noticed the NY quake over shadowed the 5.2 Colorado quake the day before

Well, aside from the fact that the East doesn't get many earthquakes, and apparently they get felt more widely in the East than in the West--I do believe that the major news media are mostly headquartered in NYC. They almost always report stuff as if the Northeast were the center of the universe. It is not and never has been the center of my universe.

Yes, I live here in Virginia. I didn't know I had earthquake here b/c I was in bed in the afternoon! My mom told me she can feel here, and the wall and the floor was shaking. She got scared! Nothing's wrong around my home. ;)

That's how it was for me the 2 or 3 times Illinois experienced an earthquake. Every time it happened, I was sound asleep. One of my most vivid memories was hearing about an earthquake that hit Chicago the day after it happened. We were at the dinner table, and I had mentioned that I heard about it on the radio on my way to school. ( I use to carry a pocket transistor radio to school to me and listen to it while on the way when I was a kid) Anyway, my sister in-law was awake when it happened, and she described how the whole house started to shake, and she could hear various items shaking inside her dresser dwars. Of course, it appened at around 3 or 4 in the morning, and I was sound saleep as was everyone else in my family.

The 2nd time Illinois had an earth quake, it was right in the middle of the afternoon, and I had fallen asleep in front of the tv. I was living in Joliet at the time, and the street where I lived was a major artery for big trucks and semis. They often would make the ground shake a little as they drove by. This was in either 88 or 89. Anyway, the earthqake that struck was equivlant to the vibration of a larg truck driving by, so I wouldn't have noticed it anyway. I would have assumed it was just a truck.

BUMMER!!!!!
