I am not a cell phone person at all, dont have one, dont want one. But what I do want is a mobile hotspot to use with my home computers and my tablet on-the-go.
Does anyone know of a company that can provide unlimited mobile internet service for about $40-$45/mo?
I tried T Mobile and the twit on the live chat couldnt wrap his mind around that I didnt need a cell phone plan....I contacted ATT and they want $50/mo for a 5gig limited plan. And Verizon was $80/mo for their unlimited plan.....
It's looking like the mobile world cant really compete with the cable company in data usage and price right now.

It was my understanding that Sprint is now the only company with any kind of unlimited plan. In fact, Verizon just announced the other day that they are doing away with unlimited for those who are grandfathered in. For now, those people can keep their unlimited as long as they don't change their plan. That means no 4G and no subsidized phones when they need a new one. Your best bet would probably be to have someone you know add you to their plan. Pass them some cash to up their data limit.
If you still have your cable internet you might find this interesting...

thats pretty cool but I was looking for something I can use in the car or in whatever vehicle while moving with my Tablet.
I did find this http://www.clear.com but it's a limited area, mostly the area I live in and travel in, but the store rep said they will be expanding their service to the nation wide 4G systems that verizon, T mobile and other providers use and will be going to the standard limited plans and probably raising their rates.....But it's still not low enough to make me kill my cable co net.....yet

80 bucks a month doesn't sound too bad, all though I will have nothing to do with owning a cell phone, I do have Cable internet. I have my cable tv, interneet and land line phone all bundled into one package, and it's not all it's cracked up to be. I am paying well over 100 bucks a month. 188 to be exact, and the service is not that good. My phone calls are fequently dropped or the phone cuts out. The cable tv also "frame drops' a lot and even goes dead for two hour stretches, and lately I've had problems with it taking for ever and a day to send an e-mail or post to a forum.
I am seriously considering changing everything as I'm clearly not getting my money's worth from MediaCom.

Re: Mobile Hot Spot??
I resisted getting a cellphone for a long time. I finally broke down and got one out of necessity. I am on my fourth car in 10 years. I have been in 3 accidents in which my car was totaled. None of them were my fault, but does not change the end result. I needed the cellphone in the case of any car trouble. About a year ago, I cancelled my land line and have never looked back. I am saving a minimum of $40 a month, probably more. I only pay $42/month for my cell service. I don't have any data plans or texting.
The best part of having only a cellphone? No telemarketers have ever called me on it. I do have cable and internet through another provider and that is not cheap. At some point, I may go with DirecTV, because I can get more for the money with a dish.

Re: Mobile Hot Spot??
Well, Boogyman, as much as I HATED it, I finaly had to break down and get a cell phone, too. I had a medical emergency last Tuesday, and luckily it happened at work. I had to go to the emergency room. Luckily I was able to drive, but when I got home, my phone service was down. Nobody was able to call me, and I was not able to call anyone else. This was a problem for 3 hours. If I needed an ambulance, I would have been in very big trouble. So, I bit the proverbial bullet and went out and bought myself one of those pre paid trak phones at the local Radio Shack. Like you, I only use it as a telephone. I don't do texting or surf the web. I can do those things, but every time hou activate the brouser it's a minute right off the top, and for every one minute you're on the web, two minutes are deducted, so that's where trak phones get you.
Right not I have over 2000 minutes and my service is good through November of 2013. I probably will have to buy more minutes, but that won't be for a while provided I don't go crazy. I, too, like the fact that I have not received one call from a telemarketer. If a telemarketer caled me on my cell, they would have to pay for the minutes that they used up. Or at least they should.
Believe me, one more ringing telephone is one thing I don't need. I have 5 to answer at work, and then the annoying calls from the telemarketers on my land line. Too bad for them my land line service is tennous at best, lately.
