Re: Count Dracula Website
I did do just that, Murf. I tried some of the local restaurants, and the food was so bad I thought I was going to be sick. I pretty much stuck with bread and cheese. Back then, I could also drink wine without the ill effects it alcohol causes me today. I think Western Europe might be better then Eastern Europe in terms of food quality, but then again, I am speaking from an experience of almost 30 years ago. Who knows what it's like in Croatia today. I hear that there are some fabulous restaurants in England, and the on board the Queen Elizabeth 2, they have some very scrumptious looking steaks and chops on their menu.

That resturant looks awesome. Additionally themed or not that food looks/sounds delicious. I don't know how reasonably priced it is but if I happened to be in Romania I would certainly head over there...William should go and let us know how it is.

Eastern Europe thirty years ago was probably pretty grim. I bet it would be way better today.

It probably is better, Murf. I haven't been there since 1986, but I still had a good time when I was there despite the horrid food.

Back in the day, pork and chicken made up 90% of what a tourist would eat in Romania. Sometimes you'd be served chicken soup/broth that still had the head and chicken feet in it.
But like Mike said, their bread was always pretty good and they seemed to import a lot of butter and jams from western Europe that would fill you up pretty good at breakfast.
Tourism now being such a big deal, I'm sure it's gotten much better. I'm told they have McDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut in Bucharest now.

McDonalds was all over the world long before now, but not in Eastern Europe. A friend of mine went to France in 1975, and there was a McDonalds in Paris. It was very popular with American tourists and some of the locals, and to boot, they actualy served wine at that McDonalds. Many Frenchmen like a glass of wine with their dinners, so McDonalds made that concession in order to do business in Paris France.
As for Eastern Europe, it soure would be interesting to see it today. But even back in the 80s, they did import a lot of their breakfast condiments from the West. I didn't starve while I was there. I just couldn't tolerate the meat they had there. Very poor quality, be it beef, pork or fowel.

I hear you. Back in 1980 I was in Germany on a school choir tour. I got roped into going to a MacDonald's in Munich because the other students thought it was so funny to do that in a foreign country. I was less than amused.NeverMore wrote:Progress?Kolchak wrote:I'm told they have McDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut in Bucharest now.

Yea, I agree. You go to foreign lands to try new food. You can always get a burger back home.
I must confess I'm not going try dog or cat though!

I can see going to a McDonalds in Europe if the food at all the other restaurants was un palletable. As I said before, one of the major down sides to my trip to the former Yougoslavia was the food there. A McDonalds would have looked pretty good to me. However, if I was in Germany, Franc, England, or some other country where the food was really good, I would probably want to try out something different. I never had Pizza in Italy before. That might be interesting.

I've never been to Italy, but I think I've heard that pizza over there is quite different from ours. I don't think they put as much on it. What we think of as pizza is basically an American invention.

I heard that too, but I would still like to sample Italian food in Italy, and Greek food in Grece.

Hey guys, want to try something different and definitely tummy rubbing yummy? If you have a Chili's Restaurant near you go in and try the one of the flatbreads. Very much like pizza, most closely resembles New York style. I'm pretty sure you can get a half order at lunch but they are so good I always try to eat a whole one. I prefer the margherita one, though everyone says the chipotle chicken is their favorite, is very good. There's also a california grilled chicken but it comes with avacado so... yuk!
Oh yeah... next time I go there I'm gonna try to get the bartender to make me a very special Bloody Mary...

Chili's pizza is pretty good. I guess I would call it "NY Style" but certainly not the quality of real NY pizza. As for that bloody mary I'm not a big fan of tomato juice but that seems pretty impressive.

No offence, DemonicDuck, but I much prefer Chicago style pizza over New York pizza. I'm a huge fan of lots and lots of toppings on a thin crust.
