I also see that Paper.com is on there with a lot of products (arts, crafts, decorations etc) that would be helpful on your own Halloween web site:

Apparently, you can make websites with google sites too. Not entirely sure how adding ads helps, but having some kind of passive income from it sounds nice. That is, assuming you can get traffic there.

Well, as someone who comes from an advertising family, I'd say that ads are the primary driver of a capitalist economy. It used to be how all television was paid for, and it seems to me we are moving back toward that model, now that the dust from the streaming wars seems to be settling.

I was both astonished and amused when Zuckerberg (sp?) seemed so embarrassed to admit to Congress that FB had been data-mining its patrons for advertisers. I thought, "How did people think he was making his billions, when FB is free?"

Advertising drives everything in a free market. But, yes, the trick is to have a web site that gets traffic.

Murf, you might check out Roku.

If the app isn't already built into your TV you can buy a simple device that plugs into an HDMI port like a DVD player and connects to your home wi-fi.

They are ad-driven, and the bulk of what you can stream if free.

Hundreds of classic and contemporary shows, movies, documentaries, TED talks, home & garden programming...you name it, are to be had for anywhere from $30 to $50.

Some of the devices include a remote control with a microphone to search by keywords.

I put one in the livingroom for my tech-impared family members and they picked up on the operation of it in no time.

The link below is the model that I purchased for $40.

https://www.roku.com/products/roku-express-4k-plus

You will need to create a free account (how else will they know whose data to collect? ) and enter a debit or c r e d i t card to use to pay for any movies or additional services that aren't already free, but no fees are charged to set-up and use the content.

Even the basic, free content if far and above what traditional basic cable offers.

That sounds great, Andy. Unfortunately, my husband has never wanted to hitch up our smart TV to the internet. He envisions Big Brother, 1984 stuff, like "they" might be listening in to our endlessly fascinating private conversations. Of course, for all I know, he may be right. But if I can ever persuade him, that Roku thing sounds like just the ticket.

It's more Brave New World than 1984 or better still Fahrenheit 451, with it's depiction of a fully immersive television room.

Well, our modern world is sort of a combination of those things. We are observed on cameras everywhere (1984). We "amuse ourselves to death" (Neil Postman's phrase), which is like Brave New World, or the old-fashioned Roman bread and circuses. And, as we become ever more dependent upon digital media to store our books and movies, Fahrenheit 451 can be accomplished with the click of a computer button.

Humans are indeed becoming the ghosts in the machine.
