Never heard about the red undies. We eat black-eyed peas and greens for good luck on New Year's Day.

Are you laughing because you do that, too? Or because you never heard of that custom before?

The stores around here sell out of black-eyed peas towards New Year's. You have to buy them early! I bought mine at the beginning of the week, and there were only a couple of bags left on the shelf!

Black-eyed peas and greens on New Year's are a Southern tradition. There are plenty of places in the US where people don't do that.

I would gladly share my recipe, though it isn't anything special. I basically soak the peas overnight, then drain them and start over with some kind of seasoned meat. Generally I use the ham left over from Christmas day, and maybe cut up an onion, use a little garlic, and boil everything until the peas are tender. But I did have another recipe I used for a while there, more of a black-eyed pea salad with a vinaigrette dressing, because my husband doesn't really like them and I was trying to find something he'd enjoy more. I believe I used the canned peas (drained) for that.

You can also use bacon or left-over ham to season the greens, or you can boil them in broth (maybe use chicken bouillon).

I also make cornbread (no sugar; we call sweet cornbread "Yankee cornbread" around here, and that's not a good thing).

Southern Living magazine generally has recipes for traditional stuff like this, often with a new twist to make it a little more sophisticated. You might try their web site and see what you find there.

hi murph,thank you im happy now i never offended you,thank you for your recipe too,much appreciated,well our custom here in scotland is first footing at the strike of midnight a "tall dark stranger" appears at your door with a lump of coal for the fire,or a cake or coin,in exchange you offer him food ,wine or a wee dram of whisky ,or the traditional het pint,which is a combination of ale,nutmeg and whisky,so there you are murph thats our hogmanay in scotland,
