Isn't the other thread "worst" horror movies? The movie that I always thought was one of the scariest was The Shining.
Be afraid....be very afraid!

Re: WHAT"S YOUR SCARIEST MOVIE"S !!!!!
Really scary? Hmmm. In recent years, The Exorcism of Emily Rose actually got to me. I gather that many other people don't react to it as strongly as I did, but for me, the eerie atmosphere and ambiguity did the trick.
My kids were scared nearly to death by The Ring when it was new and they were much younger. When I watched it, it didn't do for me what it did for them, but I did think that it had some very effective, eerie images, and that it most likely would have scared me a lot when I was a kid.
Silence of the Lambs has some great scenes, I think, particularly those between Jodie Foster & Anthony Hopkins.

Re: WHAT"S YOUR SCARIEST MOVIE"S !!!!!
Here are my top 3 scariest movies in exactly the order presented:
1. "The Blair Witch Project" That movie STILL scares the bejeebers out of me every time I screen it.
2. "The Haunting" (Original) That movie is a major thrill ride no matter how many times I screen it.
3. "The Changeling" As you can see, I am a bit of a 'haunted house" efficionado.
But there are a bunch of other movies that I loved and had a few thrills to them. The following list is well worth a screening, especialy if you haven't seen them before.
"Race With the Devil"
"The Car"
"The Shining"
"The Legend of Sleepy Hallow"
"Sleep Away Camp"
"Friday the 13th" (anything in that franchise)
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" The first 3 were the scariest
"Night of the Living Dead" (original)
"War of the Worlds"
"Carie"
"Kristine's House"
"Kristine"
I can go on and on until the Halloween.com server is maxed out, but I'll stop it here.

Re: WHAT"S YOUR SCARIEST MOVIE"S !!!!!
There have been very few horror movies that really scared me to the point that I wanted to leave the theater. Two that did though were The Exorcist (I originally saw it when I was 12 and then saw it when it was re-released in theaters with the deleted footage added back in--those are the only two times I saw it) and The Descent. IT gave me nightmares when I saw it as a kid. It doesn't do much for me now but I still love the book and I think if maybe HBO re-made it, it could be incredibly terrifying.

Re: WHAT"S YOUR SCARIEST MOVIE"S !!!!!
The only time I came close to walking out of a movie theater because of unbearable tension and, yes, fear, was when my husband and I saw Wolfen, early '80s. He asked me if I wanted to leave, and I almost said yes, but decided to stick it out. I guess there was something going on in the theater that night, some mass fear or something, because no one else even seems to remember that movie, yet it got to me as no other ever has, before or since.
It was really, really creepy, the way they used the city-scapes of the derelict neighborhoods in NYC (which I had never even seen before, hadn't even known they were there). Then, too, you saw much of the action through the eyes of the supernatural predator, and that was creepy, too. For a long time you didn't even know what it was or why it was around.
I have The Descent on DVD. It is a good horror movie, but I have trouble with it for two reasons--can't stand the death of the child early on, and I dislike that no one escapes.

Murf, your story about the movie "Wolfen," reminded me of something that I saw on tv when I was about 10 that really creeped me out. It was a scene on the animated tv series "Speed Racer." It was in the 3 part episode titles "The Alpine Race." Trixie fell asleep and she had this dream. She hears the Marh 5 pull up, and sees Speed Racer get out of the car and walk over to the edge of the clif. She jumps out of her car and runs up to embrace him. Speed Racer turns around, only instead of the face of speed racer, you saw this very evil demonic looking face, and the hands are pure fire, but that voice, even to this day, I get a chill up my spine when I think about it.

I saw "Night of the Living Dead" for the first time when I was about 11 or 12, and it was the first time I ever saw that level of gore on tv, and it scared me silly.

I like in Twilight Zone the Movie when the guy said YOU WANT TO SEE SOMETHING REALLY SCARY? Then he turned into a monster and ate the other guy face.
