Re: HIPPIELUVN'S CHRISTMAS QUEST 2015
Yes, you are right. It's in the scene with the Cratchetts. Bob has returned from church with Tiny Tim, and he repeats to his wife what Tim had said, about how it might be pleasant for others to see him on Christmas Day and reflect on the One who made lame men walk and blind men see. True, a reference to Jesus, but not by name.
OK, so maybe I pushed the envelope a bit by insisting that a Muslim girl read A Christmas Carol. I make no apologies. It is on the approved list of reading for 7th graders in public schools around here, which means it (so far) has not been classified as overtly religious in nature.

Good for you! I don't see any pushing of the envelope at all. WE are expected in our own country to be more accepting and to be more diverse. Yet this simple gesture would not be allowed in most if not all Muslim nations. These people claim to be good law abiding citizens. Prove it. Open up your eyes and mind and see something other than your limited world. It seems diversity is accepted as long as it doesn't come from a Western mindset.Murfreesboro wrote:Yes, you are right. Re: HIPPIELUVN'S CHRISTMAS QUEST 2015
Well, to her father's credit, he didn't push the issue, and his daughter did read A Christmas Carol along with the rest of the students. He was upset when he first saw the title, I guess. They were from Syria. I doubt they knew anything at all about A Christmas Carol.
In general, though, I agree that "diversity" is usually interpreted as a one-way street.
It's upsetting to me when I read about how people can't even bring Bibles into some of those Arab countries. I can buy a Koran anywhere, and I have read it. Nobody stops me. But they won't let their citizens read a Bible. I think people ban books when they are afraid of them.

I like the Charlie Brown Christmas. IIRC, that was the first of the televised Peanuts specials. I want to say it premiered in '65. I saw that one as well as Rudolph the year before, first-run. And the Grinch may have been the year after. Quite a run of great animated specials in my childhood.

Correct; CB Christmas turns 50 this year.
Last week the network aired an hour special before playing the official, 50th showing.

CB Christmas is a great show and we watch it every year. The stop motion animation movie of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer from 1964, with Burl Ives as the Snowman is also a must see for all ages!

I've always wanted to see that movie, never have. But I didn't know it had anything to do with Christmas. Is it set at that time of year?

Yes, it's set in and around the holiday season...
Doubt is filled with many seasonal themes, too...
Like reconciliation, compassion, and redemption
