Re: Gardening
Sounds like a great idea. I was thinking about just using a flower pot and growing them in doors this year.

Re: Gardening
I think I got a little carried away picking out pumpkin seeds, I got three packages at walmart, one at dollar general and one at valu home center.
I hope my dad doesn't throw a fit! But what can I say, it's my first time growing pumpkins and I want to experiment.

Re: Gardening
Honestly, you can never have too many pumpkin seeds. It's good to let them germenate indoors before planting them out in the garden. In my experience, about half of what I plant actually grows to a healthy vine.
This year I'm planting giant pumpkins and ghost pumpkins. Hoping to get a good batch of both.
Below I am including a link to a good site for learning about pumpkin growning. I got some good tips from here last year.

Re: Gardening
As much as I would love to have a pumpkin patch growing in my back yard, I have had totaly rotten luck with critters, and I just don't have the oomph to weed every day, so I am going to pick myself up a few flower pots, fill them with the best potting soil money can buy, stock up on miracle grow, and let my kitchen double as a pumpkin patch over the Summer.
I think I'm going to take a page out of DemonSlayers book, and gro one pot of Giant Jack O'lanterns, one pot of 'Jack be Littles' and one pot of regular sized pumpkins.

Re: Gardening
Actually the seeds I got were just from different places, but they're all supposed to be the same kind...EXCEPT for the pie pumpkins. So I've got four packages of different "brands" so to speak, and one package of pie pumpkin seeds. But like I said, I just want to see which ones will grow the best.
And I can't grow them indoors because there's no where to put them...I'm going to wait until my dad gets into the gardening mood though and that probably won't be until the beginning of may.

Re: Gardening
Pumpkins can really spread out, so be careful trying to grow them inside. Make sure you get a nice, big pot for the roots. Also, you want to make sure you have plenty of soil so you can put in lots of water every day.
If I were to grow pumpkins in a pot, I'd go with a 12in to 14in planing pot.

Re: Gardening
What kind of pumpkins are used in pies? I just might grow some of those.
I know what you mean about pumpkin vines spreading out, so I think I'll go with the 14 inch pots like ou suggest, and use plenty of top quality potting soil and miracle grow.
There are only a couple of things that I'm worried about. First of all, I do use central airconditioning. I hope pumpkins don't need those hot humid Summer temps to grow. Secondly, I am going on a vacation starting on the 24th of July, and I'm hope I can get one of my nieces or my nephew to come over and water my pumpkins while I'm gone.

Re: Gardening
Late July is prime growing season, so you'll want to get someone over to water every day - if possible. You might also look into a faucet timer. You can get them from garden stores or home improvement stores. Some actually fasten onto a sink faucet and can release water at a specific time, for a specific duration. You might also just go to a pet store and look at an automatic dog water reservoir. Same idea, but you just have a big jug of water the timer spout pours from.
As for the air conditioning, I don't think that will harm pumpkins at all. Pumpkins do like sun, so you'll want to try and give them exposure.

Re: Gardening
Well...my dad thinks just planting the seeds two weeks early, and covering them up if it gets really cold will do the trick. He doesn't want me to germinate them inside.
He's going to give me a very SMALL area to plant them, I just hope it works out.

Re: Gardening
Well, we put the vegetable garden in today, last thing we need to do now is plant the pumpkins, and some zuccini. The garden didn't have any room for them so now we're going back to the original plan and we're planting them next to the garage. I'm just hoping that they'll get enough sunlight.
I plan to get some manure to help them grow better. But I got my cherry tomatoes, and we planted some corn, potatoes, three different tomatoe varities, green peppers, cucumbers, and some varities of leaf lettuce, spinach and swiss chard. No idea how things are gonna turn out, but hopefully well. I'm really looking forward to harvest season. I know my dad planted some squash and radishes...oh we also planted sunflower seeds.

Re: Gardening
when I got home from grocery shopping I noticed that one bulb of garlic was sprouting so I plopped it into a pot and will see what happens.

Everyone know's that just an old wive's tale. Vampires aren't really allergic to garlic.
