Re: Stores rushing thru Halloween!
I haven't been out to town in a while but I remember last year when there were hardly any shops with Halloween things. Most of it was Christmas stock >_>

Re: Stores rushing thru Halloween!
I was in Kerr Drug earlier looking for some chocolate. Went to their seasonal aisle. Well 1/4 of it was halloween candy and another 1/8 was costuming and deco. The rest was all Christmas. Someone was stocking the candy and I was like "is this all?". she goes "yup". I was like "REALLY? your kidding!" and she looks at me all serious "Yes, and if I had my way it wouldn't be out at all. Damned Devil's Day!". So I said "ok well I know I won't be shopping here anymore" and left. I had to go elsewhere for my chocolate. I have to say that last year they had a full aisle of stuff, so I am thinking SOMEONE had a fit about how much they had and the management responded. OR they had tons left over last year. Maybe both. Who knows.

The news media are really in on the hype now.
Not that discounts on things isn't great, but it's just too soon!!

Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

Yeah, it's a little startling to look at the calendar and see that it's more than a week into October.
I confess that on the way home last night I let my Peanuts CD play into the Christmas section...

Re: Stores rushing thru Halloween!
I don't know how late in the game my post is, but that erks me, too. Already, many of the stores have bigger Christmas displays then Halloween displays, and we're not even into the double didgit dates for October yet. The real sad reality is that Christmas is already so over comercialized it isnt' Christmas any more. It seems to get worse every year, and even some of the tv comercials are pushing Christmas, with barely a mention to Halloween any more.
Sad. Really, really sad.

My Halloween party is a week away now. I am excited about it, but now I have to try and find last minute things. I will probobly have to add a Santa and Snowman to my haunted barn!!! I am having trouble finding odds and ends. I want cheap and unique things. I was lucky to find spiders at WM for $7. I have found them in other places for around $24!
I am the shadow on the moon at night

I do celebrate Christmas, too. I have nothing against Christmas music, Santa and Frosty, but they are totaly out of place in October. It also detracts from the Christmas season to have it in the stores for 3 months. And a lot of the stores don't even call it Christmas any more. They call it "Winter Holidays," or just "The Holidays."

Re: Stores rushing thru Halloween!
I've had customers that actually get angry when I would say Merry Christmas!
Grrrrrr!
The marketers have no business throwing it at us at the start of October, though.
That really sucks.

Re: Stores rushing thru Halloween!
If I don't know the person, I wish them a "Happy Holidays". If I know 'em, and know he or she celebrates Christmas, I wish 'em a "Merry Christmas". What I won't do is presume that a person I don't know celebrates any particular holiday, just because I celebrate it or lots of other people celebrate it.
A person who doesn't celebrate Christmas shouldn't be offended if someone wishes them a "Merry Christmas", and, big surprise, I've yet to meet a person who was. Likewise, no person who celebrates Christmas should be offended if someone wishes them a "Happy Holidays", because Christmas is, after all, a "holy-day" for many who celebrate it. Unfortunately, I have run into the latter who get offended at a harmless salutation of well wishes.
Perhaps (amateur psycho-analysis alert!) some folks just seek out perceived offense as a form of personal aggrandizement. "I'm offended, which means I'm important enough to be offended! Look at me! I'm important!" I don't have any other rational explanation for why a projection of positivity would be interpreted negatively.
Happy whatever you celebrate to all, and may your personal deity or deities (if any) bless you and keep you safe, happy, and healthy!
