2009 Pumpkin Carving Ideas

Post by shanda » Tue Jul 07, 2009 12:55 am

I need some new ideas for pumpkins. I have had vomiting pumpkins, pumpkins giving birth, pumpkins with tragic head injuries, and random faces. I need some new ideas.

My favorite from 2008 was a mouse house. My dd carved a door and a window. We made doors and shutters form sticks glued together. We found little felt mice to position in the doorway and on top. Great end result. She won $20 in a contest with it.

If you know of any good sites please post & share!!!

Sounds like you do less traditional pumpkins...
Last year, someone at work did one that was a farting scarecrow.

Unfortunately, that's all the non-traditional ideas I have. I do a lot of sculpting with pumpkins... but I don't even have any ideas for what to carve this year... not yet, anyway.

I have never been able to sculpt a pumpkin. Yours looks great! What tool do you use? I can never get mine to look good with a light inside. They are always too thick. I am not able to get the demension in the faces either. I need more practice I think. The scarecrow is a fun idea. I have a 13 year old son who will think it is perfect!!! Thanks!

My husband bought me some wood carving chisels at a hobby store. You could use any sort of wood gouge and it'd work. I've also seen a lot of professionals use the speedball tile cutters or clay sculpting tools.

I use the Pumpkin Masters scoopers to scrape the insides thinner AFTER sculpting a pumpkin. Just have-at the thicker areas and leave the thinner ones alone. You should go no more than 1/4" thick. I wouldn't do less than that or you risk breaking through.

Thanks!! I planted a small pumpkin patch in my back yard so I hope to have a few of my own to cut. I have one about 12'' now. We have had so much rain here, that I don't know if they will make it.
I have a little electric saw that I love. I can't cut the small details with it though. I need to practice more at the sculpting. I love the demension and depth. I like to see people who see a Jack o' lantern as more than a smile with a candle.

Jackolanterns are one of the most important parts of Halloween.
Unfortunately, I suck at carving them.
That might be overstating things a bit, but I'm definitely no artist.
My brother, however, is great at growing pumpkins.
Check this out.

Nice!

I don't know what I'd do with that much pumpkin-- it'd take me FOREVER to carve! But that's so awesome!

Yeah, I've never tried to carve on of those. I'd need a chainsaw. My brother enters contests with them in early October, though. After that, he lets me use them as outdoor decorations in my front yard.

That is great. I only have one pumpkin on my vine and it is about 12'' across now. We have had so much rain here it prob won't make it.

I was given a pumpkin that big one year. I painted a cool face on it because I didn't want it to rot to quickly. It was stolen off of my porch a couple of days before Halloween. Criminals!!!

I found a few great ideas on extremepumpkins.com. They have the best ideas. Very creative!!!

Here are some I carved a few years back for the entrance to our party.
They were supposed to be stacked together in a scene but by the time
I showed up to the party in costume I just said whatever.

Got this idea from a magazine.

this year i'm going to try and cut out good ole michael myers into one of my large pumpkins
Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

Very cool idea NeverMore. I hadn't thought to carve out several pumpkins for a Halloween "party is here" sign. I might try to borrow this for mine this year if I have enough time to make them. I'd like to do some kind of version of the flaming pumpkins one year as well.

Here are a couple of the better one's I've carved in previous years.

You want to scare people, not make them ill...
All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.
