Re: Favorite Christmas Tv Special or Movie
"A Christmas Story" is hilarious, but "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is my all-time favorite, with "The Year Without a Santa Claus" second. When I was a kid, watching "Rudolph" was a big deal. It was like this big event. If I remember correctly, it aired the first or second Friday in December at 8 p.m. on CBS. Since my sister and I had an early bedtime, watching "Rudolph" would cause up to stay up past it. So my mother made us take an evening nap. Now these Christmas specials don't seem quite as special because everything's available on DVD. On the "Rudolph" DVD, you can watch it in Spanish. It's pretty funny, but the songs are sung in English.
My least favorite Christmas special is "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer." Hate the show, and HATE that song!

I'm only passingly familiar with the song. I know it involves a reindeer, Grandma, and an unfortunate intersection of the two, but it's hard to imagine pulling even a half-hour story out of that which could be family friendly enough to be considered a Christmas Special....

Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

Re: Favorite Christmas Tv Special or Movie
There are a lot of tried-and-couldn't Christmas specials out there. Everybody is hoping to capture the magic of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, or the original, cartoon version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, or A Charlie Brown Christmas, but it isn't that easy to do.
Those three are probably my favorite childhood Christmas specials. They were all new when I was still a child myself, so I have the nostalgia of that. Rudolph, especially, was a delight and a revelation that first year it aired. My own college-age son was surprised to learn that the song "Holly Jolly Christmas" actually comes from it. I guess he thought that was a pre-existent song that they used in the special.
Sue, I agree with you that something has been lost in the era of home video/DVD. My kids never had the excitement of waiting for certain TV specials, like Rudolph, or The Wizard of Oz, or Cinderella.

.
Probably the only Christmas themed shows I will watch every time they're on are 'It's a
Wonderful Life' and 'Holiday Inn'. I may watch 'Christmas Story' and 'Charlie Brown' if
nothing else is on. Scrooged is fun to watch.

Oh yes!! How can I forget Holiday Inn? Great!
Also Christmas Vacation. I found that on YouTube, I'm going to watch that tomorrow.
I'm looking for Home Alone to be on too. It usually is around the holiday.

Whenever I watch Home Alone, I'm always secretly wishing that Joe Pesci would trade in Daniel Stern for Bobbie De Niro, and that the two of them will go Billy Batts on Macaulay Culkin.

Nice Spooky!
I haven't seen the Drummer Boy since I was little. I hardly remember it, but I loved it.
