My Daughter Just Got Her Learner's Permit Yesterday!

Post by sueluvshalloween » Thu Jul 15, 2010 3:19 pm

I'm happy and excited for my daughter, but, at the same time, very nervous! While at the DPS counter yesterday, filling out last-minute paperwork, it hit me, all of a sudden, emotionally, how she's growing up and has reached the phase in her life where she can drive a car. I always end up with mixed feelings over certain milestones, such as this one, in my children's lives. On one hand, she has to know how to drive and I'm happy for that because they have so many places they need or want to go, but on the other hand, it's scary picturing my kids behind the wheel of a vehicle! Maybe I'll take up drinking to get myself through all this, LOL!

Sue, I'm with you on this but for a slightly different reason....my second oldest son turned 13 today, in a few years he'll be old enough to drive....the problem I have with it is the insurance....I cant afford it, it's sooooo expensive it would boost our monthly payment close to $800 more!! I wouldnt be able to afford that and there's no way he'll drive with out insurance so what to do what to do......I will feel really bad if the poor kid gets his license and cant drive.....

My brothers and I had to pay for our own insurance. If we couldn't pay, we didn't get our licenses.

When I was 14 and asked my dad about driving and getting my license he said when you turn 15 you better get a job to pay for the insurance. If you want to be responsible for a vehicle be responsible for the insurance as well...I had to pay for it...he said otherwise buy a good bike :P

On average, car insurance for a teenage driver is around $2500 per year. When I was 16, it was $600.00, but my dad was able to get a better rate by bundling me, my mom and him onto one package. Later when my younger sister got her license, it was even cheaper. I did have to help pay for it. Additionaly I was expected to chip in for gas and oil, all of which I had no problem with at all. When I got my own very first car, it was a little more expensive. Again, I had to help pay for it, and of course, since the car was my own, I paid for all the gas and maintenence.

Oh wow. I feel ya. My oldest will be 19 next week. We didn't let her get her permit untin she was 16 and she was just about 8 weeks from 17 when she got was driving alone.

They are going to wreck. Pray they keep it small. Jess ran into a ditch while adjusting the radio. She "hit a deer" twice. Funny how those deer have paint to rub off.

Insurance for that menace on the road is only $60 a month. I told her I would pay it until she graduated from cosmetology school.

That will be next month. YIPEEEE!

I didn't have to totaly pay for insurance. I had to help pay for it. Some times that involved extra chores around the house and yard, or a deduction from my allowance, but I was required to learn the responsibility, and it was also an excelent motovation for avoiding getting a ticket. When I borrowed dad's car, I was also required to chip in for gas, oil and general maintenence, and I also had to take my turn washing and waxing the car as well.
