SPEAKING OF PUMPKINS

Post by Pumpkin_Man » Tue Sep 21, 2010 3:57 pm

Hi Folks:

Last weekend I took photos of the annual Harvest Days Festival we have every September, and I thought with all this talk of Halloween and pumpkins, that I would post a few pictures.

The bad news was that by the time I fnihsed my photo shoot and was ready to buy a couple of them, everything was sold out. Even the gourds and jack-be-littles were gone. Next year I'll buy my pumpkins first, then do the photo shoot.

These were mostly gourds, but there were a few jack-be-littles in and amongst them. Again, by the time I got there they were all sold out.

There were tons of pumpkins of all shapes, sizes, colors and types for sale. Unfortunately by the time I finished my photo shoot, there were none lest.

Nice pix Mike!

and I agree with Witchy, 5 bucks for a large pumpkin would be a steal around here.

Great pix!

I hope to go this weekend. I am not sure about prices around here. I am thinking that $5 was what I paid last year for average size.

We'll see.

Thanks for sharing!

That's a beautiful assortment of squash pumpkinman! Awesome!
This probably seems crazy, crazy, a graveyard theory,

Large pumpkins for only $5! I had to pay $10 the past couple of years.

I'm lucky, because a lot of our pumpkins are actualy grown here in Illinois. The town I live in is also surrounded by farms, and many farmers grow a pumpkin patch in order to sell the pumpkins during the Halloween season. They also charge a pretty reasonable price to boot.

I get paid tomorrow, so I do also plan to pick up a couple of pumpkins for when I start getting the house ready for the Halloween season. I'll be doing the cleaning this weekend, and then the decorations go up around Tuesday of Wed of next week. Additionaly I have 2 new strings of LED pumpkin lights and two new strings of LED skull lights to put up.

Your photos are gorgeous, Mike! They are certainly enough to put one in the mood of the season, if a person wasn't already there!

I think the pumpkins are slightly less expensive here this year than last. Mainly the $5 or $6 range, some cheaper. I haven't bought any yet because the hot weather just makes them rot (husband told me we hit 100 degrees yesterday afternoon in Murfreesboro). However, I have seen some beauties.

I usually look for a perfectly symmetrical pumpkin, but last year I waited so late to buy that all that was left were the oddly shaped ones. I learned then that the odd shapes can carve spectacularly well. I had one that was leaning back and laughing. It turned out great. So from now on out, I intend to look for one or two that seem a little strange.

I'm glad you all liked them. I needed to do something to get into the Fall and Halloween mood, which is why I went out and shot those photos. Techincaly, the Harvest Days Festival" is allways held on the very last weekend of Summer, but it definately has a very Fall feel to it. I allways have a great time, and they have tons and tons of Halloween items for sale there, including some antique items that you would never find at any Walmart.

Mike, have you ever been there to the pumpkin patch at the farm? Somewhere else?

iHaunt, a couple of years ago, we did take my grand nieces and nephews to a pumpkin patch where they had a hay ride, a spook house and you got to go into the pumpkin patch and pick out yor own pumpkin. I went witht hem for fun and to get my pumpkins for that year. Unfortunately I forgot my camera, because I had to run a bunch of errands that day.

Pumpkins are probably going to be cheaper this year because it was a great harvest year. Last year was a very bad year and apparently there was a bit of a shortage. They said there was a canned pumpkin shortage, but I never noticed it.
