thats just odd, most caskets that seal (via rubber gasket around the lid) have a one way vent to allow gasses to escape......

Various microbes are involved in the breakdown of the human body. In the airless environment of the sealer casket, it's the anaerobic bacteria that thrive. Unlike their oxygen-fueled aerobic counterparts, these agents attack the body's organic matter by putrefying it, turning soft body parts to mush and bloating the corpse with foul-smelling gas. In entombment in the aboveground mausoleum, the buildup of methane gas has been sufficient in some cases to blow the lid off caskets and marble door panels off crypts. To address what became known in the industry as the "exploding casket syndrome," manufacturers added "burpers" to their sealer caskets, gaskets that release — or "burp" out — accumulated gases.

In 1997, Grandad was put in a cardboard box and cremated. It cost a thousand bucks. No gasses, no goo, no burial plot, no headstone. Granny buried his ashes in a flower bed in her back yard, and put a concrete lawn ornament over him.

With space such a valuable commodity, how anybody in this day and age would still go with non cremated internment is beyond my comprehension. I don't know how anybody could sleep at night with the knowledge that a loved one is rotting somewhere.

a lot of southern baptists preach against cremation.. don't ask me why.. i've just always been taught to be "put in the ground"

which is what i'll do. i don't really want to be cremated. i like the idea of a burial plot

Can I ask you "¿Por qué?"....?

What is it about a burial plot, or being in the ground after death, that you find more appealing? I'm not trying to be confrontational in any way... I'm just purely curious.

i guess its because i've always grown up with the thought of "i will be buried"
i've never even thought about being cremated although my father wants to lol i don't know really... i just would like to buried beside my loved ones. maybe for ceremonail purpose? plus iwouldn't mind having a big ole Grand tomb stone :) i just like the idea of being buried. rotting doesn't bother me..... i'll be dead.
nothing really againt cremation.. just a preference

I dont think the Jews or the Jahova Witness allow cremation, but I could be wrong...I know the Jews require a casket with no metal in them at all

I would like to have a family crypt for all my kin, My family on my moms side has a family plot in Iowa but I understand it's full and theres no more burial allowed there...

As an interesting follow up to the question of religious objections to cremation, I found this:

http://www.baptiststandard.com/2001/1_2 ... tions.html

I thought the objections might have something to do with the idea of resurrection and the Second Coming.
